What's your focus, back home? STAR's main goal is enabling the advancement of all scientific fields, where I'm from.
[ How's that for a cold open. If Harrison looks, there's nothing from this username or IP on the network, and any attached cuddlr profile has been deleted. ]
[It's a pretty stellar way to get his attention. Harrison doesn't have the time or inclination to do more than that cursory search, but considering how open the majority of citizens have been with their information thus far, the complete lack of it in this case is intriguing.]
It began that way. Two years ago I narrowed the focus from ALL fields and focused on physics, bioengineering, mechanical engineering. Temporal research. Metahuman research. Priorities shift.
[ it’s--not that late. it’s not early, either. ]
I thought about not saying anything. I’m sure she’s told you by now. But then I realized I’d like to know, if it were me. And I know now that this must have been … the first thing you worried about, when you realized she was here.
I met Jesse accidentally. She’s frightened by me, understandably. I left her alone.
[He's still up. He's still up, and the temptation to call Jesse is almost overwhelming when he sees that message, but—but. He can't keep doing that to her. She knows where he is if she needs him.
[ it’s been maybe a week since they ran into each other at the bar. now it’s half past three!
at night. what eobard thawne is doing, exactly, we just don’t know. ]
The beach here looks like the shoreline where I first saw her. Beaches have been amusingly difficult, since then. Not that I’ve ever been much of a fun in the sun guy.
[The buzz of his phone on the table behind the couch wakes Harrison with a start, and a groan as he shifts his stiff neck. Fallen asleep on the couch again, what's, who's calling him—]
I first saw her at a conference, delivering a paper much too intelligent for that particular conference. Is there a lot of sun where you are? It's three in the morning on my section of the beach.
( it's a message he's typed up one hundred times -- with varying degrees of i'm not done yelling at you yet and i'm sorry, i fucked up, it's my fault. inevitably he finds that neither of those are really what he's feeling, finidng the idea of texting at all to be -- arbitrary. desperate. but he does settle on one, eventually )
i miss you
( because he knows, at least that much is true. there's a harrison wells shaped hole in his life, and he hasn't been sleeping, and he feels stupid, and he misses him. so there it is. )
[If the answer takes half an hour to arrive, it's only because Harrison is going through that same process. And inevitably he arrives at the same conclusion.]
I miss you too, Allen.
[There's a lot more he could say. I'm sorry I hurt you by trying not to or I didn't want this to happen and all of that is also true, but he misses Barry too. That's the least complicated thing he wants to say.
And if 'Allen' sounds weirdly distant, it's meant to be the opposite.]
[Incoming call? That never happens. Even when Jesse was missing, Eobard had texted everything. Harrison holds up a hand to motion Barry to silence and picks up.]
[Checking in, making sure he's all right, has become a necessity since finding out that Zoom's there. That Jay Garrick is Hunter Zolomon is Zoom. The man who held her captive for months. Tortured her. Put her dad through hell.
He's here.
So she's checking in. They check in with each other. Have since the catacombs. But it's more often, now. Just little calls, or texts. Something.
[ it's late when the text message sends, after midnight to be sure, because she crawled up and through his bedroom window hoping to just find him there asleep so she could snuggle up with him without much talk about why, but his room is empty. and then she quickly learns that his whole place is empty. so maybe he's still at work, or whatever, but she still strips down to her undies and crawls under the covers to try and sleep because she just needs to be out of her place for the night, that's all.
she sends him the warning text first because she doesn't actually want to scare the crap out of him when he comes home to find somebody sleeping in his bed, because that's totally what's going down right now.
well, she's trying to sleep anyways, on her stomach, face stuffed against the pillow sideways and her arms tucked under it, while the rest of her is stretched out flat. and she's definitely in bed this way because her pillow still smells like Barry and that sucks, but Harrison's pillow smells like Harrison, and that sucks considerably less. so she's just focusing on that while she tries to chill out and get some sleep, yeah ]
[Harrison takes a few minutes before he looks at his phone, then sits back in surprise.]
I'm at the lab.
I'll be there soon.
[There isn't even a moment of hesitation. Gwen had stopped by his place once or twice before when he'd been out, but she generally either came to find him at the lab (or lately, at his office at the university) or she went home and teased him about it the next morning. For her to let him know she's there, and with everything else happening...
Soon still takes about fifteen minutes, but it isn't long after that before he's letting himself in. He doesn't need any lights on to slip through the living room and to the bedroom, and there she is, flattened in his bed with her face buried in the pillow.
He sheds clothes carelessly as he crosses and climbs beneath the covers and gathers her in with one arm around her waist. And presses a kiss to her shoulder, silent and lingering. Hi.]
[Oh good. This is what he's been looking forward to the most. Especially that last name on the list.
Sorry, speedster, it's going to take at least 5 minutes before you get an answer, with the little 'typing' dots appearing and disappearing several times.]
Snart and Rory are criminal partners. Before my time, you never ran into them when I was around. Black Siren Laurel Lance is a friend on your Earth. Eobard Thawne
[And now there's another pause. He can't quite find the words to continue that one. How much does he say? What does Barry know already?]
[he makes a point of calling when he knows that harrison is busy. it's a time when he's hoping that the man will be too distracted to actually hear the phone ringing, leaving him free to leave a voicemail instead. it's easier that way. easier than having to scramble for a response to whatever harrison may have to say to him.
he takes a deep breath as the voicemail message reaches a close, the beep leaving him floundering a moment because now he has to actually talk.
okay, he can do this.]
...hey. It's, uh-- It's me.
[alright, so maybe he should have written this down or something first. but then, he hadn't expected this to feel as awkward as it does. it's not as though he really knows harrison that well, afterall. a handful of conversations, and even then, it'd mostly revolved around a future that he hasn't lived through yet. definitely not the best way to get to know someone.]
I'm still not happy that you guys hid who he was from me. But I do get why you did it.
[especially given that his first reaction to finding out about eobard had involved a confrontation with a man that could easily run circles around him. if it wasn't for their location, he knows he wouldn't have gotten away with just a few, self-inflicted, cuts and scrapes.]
I just wanted to let you know that I'm okay. I'm...staying with some friends. [because the rogues are his closest friends, now. whoops.]
And I-- I wanted to apologize for the way I reacted. I'm sorry.
[there's a pause then, as though he's about to add something to it. but instead, he just lets that breath go, shaking his head slightly as he pulls the phone away and disconnects. that definitely didn't go quite to plan.]
[It might have taken a little too long for Harrison to answer this message. Maybe Barry thinks his apology isn't accepted. It's actually just Harrison thoroughly unsure how to approach starting over, knowing what he knows, knowing how badly it had gone the first time.
And right when he'd been putting together an answer, he'd been approached by a Eudio rep and told that his incentive had been fulfilled, which had just. Changed everything. Again.
So when he finally calls, he sounds distracted.]
Barry. I've. I'm going home. But before that I wanted to. [A quiet hiss of exhaled breath, you can almost see him scrubbing one hand through his hair.]
I wanted to see you before I left. I have something for you. At the lab. If you'd like.
[And that's it. He hangs up before he can say anything else.]
